When we are kids, girls and boys love the same stuff. They all like getting muddy and splashing in puddles. They colour outside the lines. They climb trees. The scream when they are hungry or tired or have dirty nappies. But as we grow up, we grow apart.
This Inspire her Mind Commercial is my favourite explanation. All through our lives parents, teachers, government, media, peers – tell us who we should and should not be. After a while the voices inside your own head start doing that for them, and then their voices become reinforcement.
We are holding back our kids when we tell them how to grow. When we put our own biases and filters on the world we close them off from opportunity, from paths they might take which might bring them way more success than we could even imagine.
